About Us

Van Berlo Gardens are a private 2.4 acre property with extensive gardens.   Created in October 2012, the gardens have come a long way in a short time.

What to expect

The gardens are planted with a wide variety of plants that provide vibrant colour and texture throughout the season.  The emphasis is on tough plants that don't need pampering.  Water is saved for recent transplants and the vegetable garden.

The sunny front yard is a cottage-style garden with many old favourites like daylilies, coneflowers, irises, hollyhocks, and peonies.  There are also some uncommon gems like fringe tree, leadplant, American pokeweed, inula and burnet. Many native plants are interspersed with the exotic plants.

The majestic oaks in the backyard offer a shady retreat for trilliums, hostas, heucheras and ferns.   Out-of-the-norm plants include hardy orchids, arum, podophyllum, and anemonella.

The sideyard is referred to as the 'arboretum'.  Some of the interesting trees there are the tulip tree, 'Crimson Cloud' hawthorn, yellowwood, tri-colour beech, tulip tree, and a golden dawn redwood.

All of this, on a riverfront setting, with an amazing view.
