Van Berlo Gardens are a private 2.4 acre property with extensive gardens. Created in October 2012, the gardens have come a long way in a short time.
What to expect
The gardens are planted with a wide variety of plants that provide vibrant colour and texture throughout the season. The emphasis is on tough plants that don't need pampering. Water is saved for recent transplants and the vegetable garden.
The sunny front yard is a cottage style garden with many old favourites like daylilies, coneflowers, irises, hollyhocks and peonies. There are also some uncommon gems like fringe tree, American pokeweed, inula and burnet.
The majestic oaks in the back yard offer a shady retreat for trilliums, hostas, heucheras and ferns. Out-of-the norm plants include hardy orchids, arum, patrinia and anemonella.
The side-yard is referred to as the 'arboretum'. Some of the interesting trees there are the tulip tree, 'Crimson Cloud' hawthorn, yellow-wood, 'Forest Pansy' redbud and a golden dawn redwood.
All of this on a riverfront setting with an amazing view.
